2009 - 2010 Scholarship Information

Who May Apply:
Any student at an institution that has an Alpha Sigma Lambda Chapter and who has achieved the follow criteria:

• Completed 30 semester hours of graded coursework at their institution (Not including transfer credits)
• Achieved an overall grade point average of at least or 3.2 on a scale with 4.0 as the highest grade at their institution
• Is 24 yrs of age or older
• Is enrolled in a baccalaureate or associates degree program at the matriculating institution
• Has a financial need for assistance in completing the degree
• Student does not have to be a member of the local Alpha Sigma Lambda chapter to apply

Student applicants do not have to be members of the local Alpha Sigma Lambda chapter to apply.
Number of Awards to Be Given:

• Four $1200.00 scholarships and two $1500 scholarships are open to students from any chapter institution.

The Olaniyan Scholars Program

The Olaniyan Scholars Program is highly selective and yet very supportive of student goals. Once each student’s interests and major are identified, the program is customized to enable each scholar to optimize their academic, professional, and career goals. Throughout their years of eligibility, each scholar is not only mentored and supported within the program, but also works under the guidance and mentoring of a faculty member in their chosen area of study. Together the scholar and their faculty mentor design and work on a research project throughout the academic year. Scholars also gain valuable experience, not only as researchers, but in presenting their work at a conference and/or student research forum.

Additionally, scholars participate in community internships in partnership with organizations working to enrich, support, uplift, and encourage African and African American populations in Indianapolis. These internships are crafted to fit student needs and interests.

Presidential Scholar Application

The IUPUI Undergraduate Student Government, government of the IUPUI student body, is excited to introduce the Presidential Scholar Program and is now taking applications through January 30th.

The purpose of this scholarship is to introduce students to the Undergraduate Student Government, learn about University policies, and recognize outstanding students of any career concentration for their commitment to student government. This student will work closely with the USG President and will gain leadership, networking, and professional development experience during a semester term. Some of the benefits of this program include:

• Networking opportunities with various campus administrators and faculty
• In depth understanding of the University system
• A $600 scholarship stipend
• Leadership styles developed through team work
• Shadow experience to become a potential USG leader

Eligibility Requirements:

• Must be Hispanic of 1st, 2nd or 3rd generation
• Resident of Indiana
• High School Senior, Freshman, Sophomore or Junior in College
• Must be accepted by an Accredited College/University
• Must be pursuing an Associate or Bachelor’s
• Must have a GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale
• Demonstrated Financial Need based on Parents’ 2008 Federal Income Tax Forms
• Must have Community Service and/or Outreach experiences
• Verifiable, unique or Unusual circumstances regarding Need

Norman Brown Diversity and Leadership Program

Cultural, social, economic, and educational discrimination in America has produced a situation in which certain citizens are considerably underrepresented in higher education. Considering this social and historical context, recommendation from a select committee of campus faculty and staff defined the term, underrepresented student, as referring to students with African American, American Indian, Asian American, and Hispanic American ancestry. Understanding that a number of factors impact a student's access to higher education, equal consideration is given to students enrolled in disciplines in which their race, ethnicity, and/or gender have been historically underrepresented. As such, this program serves as an intergal component of Indiana University's and more specifically IUPUI's commitment to increasing campus diversity.

The Norman Brown Diversity and Leadership Scholars Program provides an important mechanism for ensuring student success. By fostering an enviornment where underrepresented students recieve adequate funding to pursue their degrees, are provided a mentor to help steer them through their academic career, are immersed within the activities of the IUPUI community to embed a sense of citizenship and leadership, and are saturated within a culture of other scholars to help with their social development, NBDLP is producing avenues for underrepresented students to succeed in acadamia and beyond.

Minorities in Government Finance Scholarship

The GFOA's Minorities in Government Finance Scholarship of $5,000 is available for award to an upper-division undergraduate or graduate student of public administration, (governmental) accounting, finance, political science, economics, or business administration (with a specific focus on government or nonprofit management). The purpose of the Minorities in Government Finance Scholarship is to recognize outstanding performance by minority students preparing for careers in state and local government finance. The winner of the scholarship is invited to attend the Government Finance Officers Association's annual conference, where the award is presented. This scholarship is funded by Microsoft.

Eligibility:
• Currently a full- or part-time upper-division undergraduate or graduate student in public administration, (governmental) accounting, finance, political science, economics or business administration (with a specific focus on government or nonprofit management).
• Belong to one of the following groups (as defined by the U.S. Census Bureau): Black or African American, American Indian or Alaskan native, Asian, Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander, Hispanic or Latino.
• Citizen or permanent resident of the United States or Canada.
• Recommendation by student's academic advisor, department chair (undergraduate students), or dean of the graduate program (graduate students).
• Student has not been a past winner of a scholarship administered by the Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada.
